Welcome to Sestieri!

Hello and welcome to Sestieri!

My interest in “neighborhoods” began when I visited Venice, Italy in the summer of 2012 and was fascinated by the sestiere (districts) which comprised the small tiny islands and made up the beautiful city of Venezia. It was a remarkable feeling that even in such a small city there could be such a distinctive flair within its six districts.

Subsequently, I experienced a similar sentiment in New York. Here, one could cross the street which divided SoHo from Chinatown and it became so salient that the neighborhood’s vibe had completely shifted. In some cities, going from one end to another, the changes are gradual and incremental. However, in some cities like New York adjoining neighborhoods can be like night and day.

As I traveled more cities each year, I grew more and more interested on what encompassed the city on a more micro level and how the small units/neighborhoods/sestiere amalgamated to form the city.

I look forward to sharing my travels and random discoveries with you!
